LIFE ON MARS

I BLAME “LIFE ON MARS”

Several years ago I hosted a party night with friends to do a group viewing of several episodes of the fantastic television series “Life on Mars” starring Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt and John Simm as Sam Tyler. A comedy drama detective series, it was and still remains one of the best written tv series. It was set in 1973 so we decided to dress up in clothes from that era, eat 1970’s food and drink 1970’s cocktails. Think Chicken in a Basket, Prawn Cocktail and Black Forest Gateau washed down with a Snowball and some Mateus Rose. It was great fun but what do you do with the leftover Advocaat? (And Blue Curaçao, for that matter!) And that is where all this started.

I needed to be creative to get rid of the bottle and, no, I didn’t want more Snowballs!! I started sweetening porridge with it and realised it gave a creamy taste and colour to the dish. And then I mixed it with double cream and hey presto an instant custard. Warmed slightly in the microwave it made the perfect accompaniment to Eve Pudding. I regularly serve this to dinner guests and it goes down a storm. The net result is that I am now never without a bottle of Advocaat.
